There is actually a nice area of Kinshasa which is peaceful, tidy, and safe - it is located just next to the presidential palace and the River Congo. I spent several hours walking in this area - although access to the river was blocked by the army - probably because Friday's coup attempt happened in this area. I ended up having lunch at a hotel where I ran into several colleagues. The weekends here are a real contrast to the weekdays - there are few people out on the street and the city almost seems safe.
